For the incoming class of 2027 and the people who make their offices run

Moving to Washingtonfor Public Service

Congratulations on your election. Whether you need a weekday residence near the Capitol or a home for your family, I help members, senators and congressional staff buy homes in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, D.C., with complete discretion.

The discretion part, in writing

No content, ever

Your search will never appear in my content: no posts, no tags, no "just closed" photos and no name in any marketing.

Appointments scheduled under my name, not yours. Off-market options where they exist.

Shortlist before you fly in

I preview homes in person and send video walkthroughs, so your time here is spent on finalists, not first looks.

Senators-elect, Members-elect and Staff

Your Washington home, bought in one trip

You'll make this decision from your district, in the same weeks you're hiring an office. I keep it short and well informed, and I do the legwork here.

How buying from out of town works →
  1. 01

    A 20-minute call

Your chamber, your schedule, your household and your budget. From that, I narrow the region to two or three neighborhoods that fit.

  2. 02

    A shortlist with the numbers

Every home comes with recent sales nearby, the property tax bill and the ride to your office building. I preview each one in person and send video.

  3. 03

    One trip, then closing

You fly in to see the finalists. I negotiate, manage inspections and keep the closing on schedule while you're back in your district.

Personal and committee staff

A full relocation, on a short timeline

New offices hire fast, and new committee majorities hire faster. If you just accepted a job on the Hill, you have weeks, not months, to decide where to live.

  • Commute first. Which side of the Capitol you work on changes which Metro line you want. The table below sorts it out.
  • First-time buyer? Start with the programs. D.C. (HPAP), Maryland (Maryland Mortgage Program) and Virginia (Virginia Housing) each run first-time buyer programs. I will connect you with lenders who use them.
  • Your search, not your boss's. I work with you directly, on your time, about your move.

Getting to the Capitol

House office buildings sit by Capitol South station; Senate office buildings are closest to Union Station. Pick the line, then the neighborhood. If you have never ridden Metro, the primer below covers the basics.

Six lines: Red, Orange, Silver, Blue, Yellow and Green. Each card below is a single train, start to finish, with no transfer.

Trains go by last stop

Platform signs and trains show the end of the line, not “inbound” or “eastbound.” From Bethesda, you board the Red Line train marked Glenmont.

Choosing where to live

Side by side

The questions I hear most from people new to the region. Tap any comparison to open it.

Maryland vs. Virginia
Commute
The Maryland suburbs ride the Red Line to Union Station, the Senate side. Northern Virginia rides the Orange, Silver and Blue lines to Capitol South, the House side.
Income tax
For members, federal law (4 U.S.C. § 113) bars the state where you keep a Washington residence from taxing your income unless you represent that state, so income tax rarely decides it. Staff pay income tax where they live, and Maryland adds a county income tax on top of the state rate. Verify your situation with your accountant.
Cars
Virginia counties levy an annual personal property tax on vehicles; Maryland does not.
Closing costs
Transfer and recordation taxes paid by buyers are typically higher in Maryland than in Virginia. I will estimate them for any home you consider.
Flying home
Reagan National is in Arlington, a short drive or Metro ride from most of Northern Virginia.
Bethesda vs. Chevy Chase
Character
Bethesda has a downtown of its own, with condos close to the Metro and single-family streets around it. Chevy Chase is almost entirely single-family and sits right on the D.C. line.
Which side of the line
Chevy Chase is split between Maryland and D.C. The D.C. side means D.C. taxes and D.C. Public Schools (Jackson-Reed). The Maryland side includes several small incorporated towns with their own rules on things like building permits and trees.
Commute
Both are on the Red Line. Friendship Heights is one stop closer to Union Station than Bethesda.
Schools
Bethesda splits among Bethesda-Chevy Chase (8/10), Walt Whitman (9/10) and Walter Johnson (8/10). Chevy Chase, Maryland, feeds Bethesda-Chevy Chase.
Bethesda vs. Potomac
Lots
Potomac is where you find acreage and larger lots. In Bethesda you trade lot size for walkability.
Commute
Bethesda has a Red Line station. Potomac has none: you drive to the Capitol or to a Red Line station.
Schools
Potomac feeds Winston Churchill (10/10), with parts feeding Thomas S. Wootton (10/10). Bethesda splits among B-CC (8/10), Whitman (9/10) and Walter Johnson (8/10).
Best fit
Potomac suits a household that wants space and doesn’t need to commute every day. Bethesda suits someone who wants to walk to dinner and take the train to work.
Arlington vs. McLean
Government
Arlington is its own county. McLean is an unincorporated part of Fairfax County.
Housing
Arlington runs from high-rise condos along the Rosslyn–Ballston corridor to single-family streets in north Arlington. McLean is mostly single-family on larger lots.
Commute
From much of Arlington you can walk to a station and ride the Orange Line to Capitol South. In McLean, most homes are a drive from the McLean or East Falls Church stations.
Schools
McLean feeds Langley (10/10) and McLean High (9/10). Arlington feeds Yorktown (8/10), Washington-Liberty (7/10) and Wakefield (4/10), depending on the address.
Arlington vs. Alexandria
Commute
From Arlington, the Orange, Silver and Blue lines run to Capitol South with no transfer. From Old Town Alexandria the Blue Line also reaches Capitol South with no transfer, but it is a longer ride and Blue trains run less often.
Flying home
Both are close to Reagan National. From Old Town it is a few Metro stops.
Housing
Old Town has historic rowhouses and a walkable waterfront. Arlington has more new construction and more high-rise condos.
Check the address
Many homes with an Alexandria mailing address are actually in Fairfax County, not the City of Alexandria. That changes the school system and the tax bill, so I verify it for every home.
D.C. vs. the suburbs
Commute
Capitol Hill is a walk to both chambers. Every suburb on this page adds a Metro ride or a drive.
Taxes
D.C. has its own income tax for residents (members are covered by the same federal rule above). Staff who live in D.C. pay it. Verify your situation with your accountant.
Housing
In D.C. you mostly choose among rowhouses and condos. Single-family homes on their own lots are mostly in the suburbs.

Tax information here is general, not tax advice. Verify with your accountant. School ratings are from GreatSchools as of November 5, 2026.

Questions I get

Can I buy before I have spent much time in the area?

Yes. I preview homes in person, send video walkthroughs and line up finalists for a single trip. The neighborhood comparisons on this page are a good place to start.

Which neighborhoods have a one-seat Metro ride to the Capitol?

Bethesda and Chevy Chase via the Red Line to Union Station; Arlington and McLean via the Orange and Silver lines to Capitol South.

Which Capitol commuter neighborhoods have the highest-rated public high schools?

On GreatSchools as of November 2026, Langley (McLean) and Winston Churchill (Potomac) are rated 10/10, McLean HS and Walt Whitman (Bethesda) 9/10, and Bethesda-Chevy Chase, Walter Johnson and Yorktown (Arlington) 8/10. Assignment is by address, so verify any specific home.

Can you keep my search confidential?

Yes. Showings are booked under my name, nothing is posted, and your name never appears in my marketing.
